The U.S. Customs Service has long been at the forefront in the war on drugs. Since the events of Sept. 11, 2001, however, the department is now on the front lines of the war on terrorism. This means big changes for companies that import or export goods.
On March 1, the bureau officially joined with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and the U.S. Border Patrol to form the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. The investigation arm of the service has become the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Both bureaus fall under the Office of Homeland Security.
