Fed: Government claims milestone, 1 yr no illegal boat entries
Immigration Minister PHILIP RUDDOCK says the absence of illegal refugee boat arrivalsfor the past year proves the success of the government's refugee policies.
Mr RUDDOCK says refugee processing costs will fall because of the end of illegal boat entries.
He says the milestone's proof the government has succeeded in its response to people smuggling.
Mr RUDDOCK says the government's comprehensive strategy has also stopped people riskingtheir lives in dangerous journeys organised by people smugglers.
And he says given that there have been no new unauthorised boat arrivals for more than12 months, processing costs are expected to reduce considerably in 2002-03 and continueto fall in subsequent years.
