Fed: Farmers angry over new immigration measures

CANBERRA, Jan 12 AAP - Farmers were being forced to act as immigration officials under
new federal government measures which threatened them with big fines or jail if they hired
illegal workers, they said today.

The NSW Farmers' Association called on the government to urgently reconsider the new
rules under which farmers could be fined up to $66,000 or face up to two years' jail if
they employed an illegal worker.

NSW Farmers' spokesman Graeme Sowter said the tough penalties, to come into operation
